DMX Krew presents the music that has influenced him, from Kraftwerk to LL Cool J, from fusion jazz to hardcore rave, it’s a chronological journey from a unique voice in electronic music.

DMX Krew’s ‘Bass Drop EP’, Turbo 057, will be released in December. Here’s the press release for that to give a bit more background:

We at Turbo are longtime fans of DMX Krew, so it’s a real honor to work with him again 6 years after his last contribution to our now defunct sub-label ‘White Leather’. We don’t normally trace an artist’s history or include much biography in our press releases, but we feel the need in this case to pay our respects to a long and brilliant career. With all the crap that gets paraded around nowadays it’s easy to forget who the real masters are… ED DMX is one of them.

I’ve always held a soft spot for Ed, he was one of my favorite producers in the proto-electro heyday. Hearing his live version of the Knight Rider theme at Sona (Tiga’s club circa ‘96) was (believe it or not) a revelation. Of all the artists I’d met up until then, he was the coolest: he could play synths better than anyone I’d ever heard, he had the balls to do vocals in his live-set, but he was a sweet, soft-spoken, and super funny guy.

For reasons I’ve never understood, Ed’s pop side didn’t seem to take off and for awhile things took a distinctly experimental turn… interesting stuff, but a departure from the bright immediacy I loved in his earlier records. I was starting to put him into that category of genius artist that pissed me off because they weren’t making the music I wanted them to make, but were on some brain-trip doing things I didn’t understand (think Aphex Twin, Prince, Jori Hulkkonen…). So I let him fall off my radar… And THEN…

2007 rolls around and his alias 101 Force drops ” ‘Tha Return’, followed shortly thereafter by ‘SH101 Triggers MS10′, easily two of my favorite records of the year and some of the best acid house ever made. Buy them now. I could blather on and on about how incredible those records are, but the important thing is that we took action and signed ‘The Bass Drop.’

This EP doesn’t reference or pay homage to Acid House so much as it embodies it. This is the real deal.

It is with great pride that we bring you DMX Krew, same as he ever was, the analog don back to school all you blog-turds in the art of the acid groove.

While the Munich based producer is best known for his NHL-anthem ‘Kernkraft 400′, he’s hardly a commercial dance act, having produced darker, gritty techno both under ‘Zombie Nation’, his alias ‘John Starlight’, and as one half of ZZT along with Tiga. He’s one of the best performer’s in live techno, foregoing the ubiquitous Ableton setup in favor of an oldschool approach centered around the classic MPC. He’s got incredible stage presence, mixing control with chaos in just the right proportion, with enough novelty (masks, fake blood, head banging) to keep crowds staring in awe.

John Starlight’s ‘Road Rage’ has just been given an incredible remix by Popof, and the new ZZT record ‘The Worm’ is set to drop in October on Turbo Recordings.

I was sent this mix by a guy called Duff, a Spanish DJ who writes an impressive looking music blog. I can’t read Spanish, but it’s nice to see someone writing pages about music with no free download links.

He’s a big fan of the label and he paid his respects with a great retrospective.

The mix is a bit rough around the edges… but I thought it was a well chosen selection of some of Turbo’s finest moments, and deserved to get some extra exposure. Hope you enjoy it!

Check out this excellent interview on his site from Jori Hulkkonen (this one is in English):
Please note that if you’re not French, you’ll still enjoy most of this mix but there’ll be a few that you’ll be biologically forced to skip. The A&R police at Turbo were able to forgive the obvious indulgences because we ARE true romantics at heart (even if OUR idea of romance is a six hour 303 symphony). I’ve recently had the pleasure of staying with Julien in his adorable apartment in Paris and I’m pleased to report that this mix legitimately sounds a lot like his life feels – like a cross between a Wes Anderson and Eric Rohmer film. Enjoy!

Julien Plaisir De aka Sweetlight will be in town directly from Paris (where they specialize in Love!!). During the 5à7 he will also showcase a picture exhibition which will also appear in our Sid Lee Collective Gallery.

Here’s a little Bio on Julien :

Originally playing whatever makes noise in a dodgy Nantes pop group influenced by seminal bands such as My Bloody Valentine, Stone Roses and the like, Julien turned into DJ-ing in raves after being thrown into the dance craze in 1992 and dancing his ass off to Laurent Garnier, Luke Slater, Aquarium, Jeff Mills, Tom & Jerry Bouthier, Mike Ink… From there, Julien developed his DJ-ing style by playing all the key parties in the Brittany area in France and make his first international appearance in Amsterdam in 1999. He got his first breakthrough as a producer with Boris Hervé & S Rom as “Plaisir de France”, thanks to his encounter with the Pro Zak crew in 2000 and released several EPs that have being playlisted by DJs from all across the house board. However, his collaboration with Dan Ghenacia is what really put Julien on the international map. He started a production team under the name of Sweetlight & Dan Ghenacia and continued with the Sweetlight project with his production mate Alexis Desaegher on Dan Ghenacia’s label FreaK n’Chic.

So tell all your facebook friends and be there to groove with us in this first (of hopefully many) Sid Loves Turbo events.

It’s a hectic job bringing Turbo back into the global spotlight, and as our dedicated listeners may have noticed, Sid Loves Turbo has seen delays as a result. I knew I had to pull in the reins and get some content together fast while finishing my next podcast, so I asked friend and Montreal DJ Mike Mind to give us his latest mix, complete with tracklist and artwork, thinking I would save time. What I didn’t take into account
was that Mike would give me a virtuosic, densely-layered mix with 21 tracks, and that it would be up to me to figure out where ‘Skoozbot’ ended and ‘Glass Candy’ begun… just putting the track markers in took me over an hour!!! and I’m the Power-User computer-whiz responsible for the Tiga / Turbo mainframe.

Next time you think you’ve been working hard, chew on this: Mike doesn’t sleep! He has been working continuously since he was 4 years old. While you were playing in the sandbox, he was counting grains of
sand, while you were taking 3 classes so you could have Fridays off he was 16 years old at Harvard, while you were getting high at a party last weekend, he was jacked up on black coffee studying drum layering, and while you were taking a lunch break yesterday he was eating a cigarette to get the edge he needed to EQ this mix.

Here’s the deal: the world can only ignore intelligence and diligence for so long… mark my words people, sooner or later, Mike Mind is going to the top, and it will be a well-deserved ascent, so if you’re smart, you’ll get your think on and be down with this Brain-mix.

Turbo Recordings is a label dedicated to releasing only the highest quality of electronic music. Based in Montreal, Canada, Turbo has quickly become an internationally recognized brand with their trademark mix of uncompromising music and cutting edge artwork.

Tiga heard Matt play at T Bar and thought he was great, so we asked him to do a podcast for us, and he was really sweet and grateful at the opportunity. A week later he came back to us with this dope mix of acid and disco - some unreleased new records (great new Juan Maclean!!) and some old gems (Don Quixote, where have you been all my life?), all kicked off by a classic ‘Screamadelica’ intro you’re about to hear. There are no obvious tracks, no ‘mash-up’ of no- brainer-bombs… just weird groovy records picked with passion and confidence…

This is an old-fashioned mix with the analog warmth of an all-vinyl set, put together with the cool knowledge of a myspace kid… a rare balance in today’s blog-o-sphere.
